Free Meal

Last week we indulged in fried fish of the all you can eat variety. We found the first serving to be more than we could eat. So, instead of St. Patrick's Day corned beef and cabbage that I had planned, HeWho had a taste for more fish.

It rained all day and HeWho was cold all day. It got up to 54 and I refused to fiddle with the thermostat, so he sat in his favorite spot in his heavy Carhardt coat and an afghan. If he thought I might take pity on him, he was wrong.

He was determined to venture out in the rain to go eat, though. The server told us to sit anywhere we liked and I slipped into the first booth. Won't do that again, as the storm ramped up and it rained harder accompanied by a gusty wind. Every time the door opened, the cold air hit us. For awhile, the wind would blow in every time the door opened and would literally take my breath away.

Then it took our bill away and it landed on the table behind us. I said to the nice man in the booth that I was trying to give him our tab to pay. I was joking ...... but he insisted on picking it up and paying it!! I felt really bad about it, so we gave our server a nice big tip and HeWho made nice with the man. He fixes vehicle motors and I told him he would see us for sure, because both our vehicles are paid for and need to last our lifetime.

As you can see I did not get the fish. I got pork chops, fried okra and green beans. Two big chops there and one came home with me. It was tasty and I am certain that HeWho has regained his appetite will be happy to eat it before he goes to bed.

Now I feel like I should break my car and have the man fix it. That feeling went away, as I am not feeling THAT guilty.

This morning I started a new regimen of waking HeWho sleeps too much at 9:30. I got up in the wee hours to seek out the facilities and relieve myself, when I got back in bed, he was sighing deeply. I asked if something was wrong and he said he couldn't sleep. Could it be that he sleeps until noon, then naps around 2 and is ready for bed by 9 at the latest?

He is like a baby who has days and nights mixed up and now I must retrain his brain. His brain is a scary place. I picture random thoughts floating around, attached to nothing significant. We were talking and I was reminising. Note that I said I was reminiscing, since HeWho didn't remember the things I was remembering. I thought short term memory was the one to worry about. He asked me if I had ever met his cousin! I replied that since we have been together for nearly 49 years, that of course I had.

The free meal is the highlight of the week here on the mountain side. Next week will find me having a mamogram and bone density test. Next will be the cardiologist to okay a colonoscopy and endoscopy. This will be done in one visit so I won't be subjected to anesthesia twice. I can hardly wait, but the surgeon is booked until June and will be done in a hospital we have yet to visit!

  1. That pork chop looks good. Hick has the same sleeping problem, but he does get up around 6:30 on his Storage Unit Store days, and by 8:00 on days he sleeps in. Then he complains that he tosses and turns all night. The 2:00 nap and the 8:00 p.m. bedtime must have something to do with it, I tell him.

    1. The pork WAS good. I was gong to orde the fried squash instead of the green beans, since I now live in the deep fried section of the country .... Good luck on explaining how sleep works to a man.

  2. That yellow thing is a pork chop? I don't like pork and have never seen a pork chop coated like that, people here tend to just toss them on the barbecue without anything added, or sometimes marinated. I hope you manage to retrain the sleeping habits.

    1. Living in the mid west (Missouri) we learned quickly that pork was the meat choice there. Here it is chicken, and here they fry EVERYTHING! It is the preferred method of food prep. I try not to fry the food I prepare and ususally eat it when we go out. I don't like to clean up the splatter of the grease. I don't care much for complicated prep and salt and pepper will usually add all the flavor I want. The sleep re-training is not going as well as I had hoped it would. Today he got right up, but that could be due to the small fit I threw yesterday!

  3. I don't think I've ever had a chicken fried porkchop. Your weather is what we're having this week...winter, cold and wet. We don't usually go to bed until 10, sometimes 9:30 and rise about 7:30 though the last two nights I've slept until 8:30. I'd have had no problem telling the server I wanted to move to a different table after the second blast of cold air. And what a kind gesture of the man to pay for your meal, either that or a way to ensure future business.

    1. I am sure it was an act of good will that also promoted his business, we have done similar things in the past when we had a business to promote. People love freebies. I tend to rise with the sun and wind down with the sun. I chose the table and the others filled quickly. Made us eat and get going faster! The storm calmed as we were leaving.

  4. When I came home from rehabbing after breaking my femur I really had to retrain my brain. It had to be done! I was napping away most of every day, simply not motivated to do much of anything. I would go to bed at 9 and get up at 8 and did nothing all day but doze and sometimes weave. Now I keep the same hours, but get so much done during the day because I've put it on my calendar to do. Hard to explain I know, but it works. I keep an eye on the clock. But it was all about retraining my brain.

    1. I am a firm believer that you sleep better if you accomplish something during your waking hours. This coffee bar project is lingering way too long and has lots of clutter waiting in my small space and this is disturbing my sleep! I don't mind lazing a rainy day away occassionally, but he would like to laze every day away.

  5. I laughed at your moment of weakness thinking about breaking your car, then recovered. LOL

    1. HeWho has been driving my car ..... I won't have to break anything since he is quite capable of taking care of that. I am still waiting for him to take care of the body work he did in 2021. Too bad the guy does engine work only.
